Piyush Purusottamdas Patel has been appointed with the rank of ADG, by downgrading the head of the anti-graft body
The Government of Gujarat has appointed 1998-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Piyush Purusottamdas Patel as the chief of the state’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in the rank of Additional Director General (ADG) by downgrading the post of the Director General (DG).
Patel, who has so far been waiting for a posting, will replace 1991-batch IPS officer Shamsher Singh, who held the position of the Director General of the Gujarat ACB till he was sent on a central deputation and was made Additional Director General (ADG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) for a tenure up to 31st March 2026.
The post of the Gujarat ACB’s DG has been lying vacant since Singh was shifted to the BSF headquarters in New Delhi.
However, many senior officers in IPS circles believe that with the downgrading of the post of the DG, ACB, to the level of Additional Director General (ADG), the weight and importance of the anti-graft body in the state will take a beating.
The ACB takes action against public servants of all ranks, and cases may come up where officers involved may be senior to the new ACB chief.
Before being repatriated to his home cadre Gujarat, 1971-born Patel held the position of Inspector General of the BSF. He has a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Electronics & Communication and hails from Ahmedabad in Gujarat.
Earlier in his cadre state, he served as ADGP, Surat range and also worked in the BSF as a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the year 2013.
